The source of the numbers

Home values come from the Zillow Home Value Index, which values a typical home at the center of each market. Realtor.com Economic Research supplies listings and days on market, the FHFA house price index supplies the long state series, and the Census Bureau's American Community Survey supplies incomes. Every figure shows its month and its source. The methodology page explains the arithmetic.
